This is off topic, but I recently came into a second hand Mac Mini G4 and have no need for the Mac OS.

Is MorphOS an interesting platform to take a look at?

Sure!  It is about as fast of an Amiga-like OS as you're likely to find on a PPC Mac.  I've got an old G4 PowerMac that's hardly any better than an Efika but if you've got an up-to-date Mac, you'll be in fine shape.

My only complaint is that the registration fee for the OS is kind of high at 111 Euros or thereabouts.  But if your Mac fails completely and you have to get another Mac, you can send a picture of your fried Mac and they will send you a new registration key for the new Mac.

It depends on what you want to do with the machine, of course. I don't quite see how this could be an Os for productive use as the software library is rather small, compared to - say - Windows or Linux. Just because it "looks like AmigaOs" is not quite an argument - UAE plus a PC would also do that job.

why, mos is probably as relevant as uae, natami or anything else amiga, that means it depends on own user interest. none is going to answer that question for someone else, the nly way is to try it out. i have not, i admit.

My MorphOS mac mini runs all the old productivity programs from the 3.x era perfectly - at least the ones I've tried.

Also WarpOS compatability, that's nice. Runs more Hyperion software than OS4 does! (Haha, kidding. But it really does.)

I think I heared there is a trial-function built in so you can install and test it for a limited time. If you like it can noone else answer, some love it, others not. For me it is more or less the same as AmigaOS4 (not interesting).

Link to the trial-version:

I think it only runs for 30 Minutes, perhaps enough to decide if you want to use it

Download Morph OS and burn a disk, load and install.  Until you get a license the OS will slow down after 30 minutes, just reset and start again until you get a feel for it.  Then if you like it, "Buy It" or not . . . . :-)

I've been using Morphos since 2003.  Best Amiga-like Os I have ever seen or used. (haven't used Amiga OS 4.1+) Morphos has a beautiful mixture of all the best of what I like about Amiga os 3.x, without all the patching.  I still use my A3000 sometimes, but Morphos is far more modern, and on newer hardware tremendously faster.  Enjoy!!

MorphOS is just fine to look at. I run version 2.0 on the lowly Efika. The latest version on that mac mini of yours would surprise you. There is getting to be more 3rd party software, you just have to hunt it all down. Maybe not as much as what can be had for other AmigaNG platforms though. MorphOS runs fairly efficiently and has good overall stability. Give it a try with the free trial version. You have nothing to lose.

MOS seems to be the most viable modern amiga option with entry level hardware with second hand macs. Of course its heritage runs back to phase 5 days with their accelerators running MOS eventually.

The OWB web browser seems to be the most advanced on the amiga(like) platforms. Also with MOS3.0 coming it will be the first portable/laptop amiga platform running on powerbooks.

As has been mentioned if you have a mac already you have nothing to lose. I dual boot leopard and MOS. There is a ubuntu ppc linux that can be installed but i have only used it for partitioning the mac mini i use.
