| I have looked at different distributions that might be interesting for Natami. OS 3.9 is not bad but it looks a little oldfashioned. Then I looked at Amikit (http://amikit.amiga.sk/). It looks great (f.e. transparant menu, 24Bit-Icons...), but the last Update was from 2009. I found a instruction to install it natively on a (well-equipped) Amiga 4000 and a video from a person that installed it on a Amiga 1200, so I hope it is possible to run on Natami too. It needs a lot of resources for all that optical effects, but everything has a price :). I am now testing and updating Amikit and hope I can publish it as a package or several packages. It should include the newest libraries and mui-classes, additional cli-commands, updates for the existing components (>300) and addional tools (Aminet), the whole set of fish-discs and former commercial applications that are now free to use. What do you think? And is there anyone interested to help me with this (huge) project?

AmigaOS 3.9 glow icons are not very many colors but look ok. More colors looks better obviously but there better be RTG support or they will be slow. I image that AROS will not be bug free or fast enough to be the default when the Natami ships. Hopefully, someone is working on a P96 driver in the mean time. I recommend Peter Keunecke's (not Natami's Peter K) icon.library upgrade on Aminet and already part of the unofficial BB3. It's much faster, works well with RTG or not, and supports Amiga png icons. The only down side is that saving tooltypes in a png will convert it to AmigaOS 3.9 standard. Peter Keunecke talked like he may add built in png support instead of using the png datatype if there was enough demand. He's a real nice guy and he's good about responding to e-mails so don't hesitate to contact him. Many of the 24 bit icons are based on Ken's icons which I believe would be free to use. You can google and search Aminet. The transparent menus is probably an option of Magic Menus available for a long time. It can cause problems with some other programs so I would leave it in the commodities directory as default. Some of the programs that Amikit uses would not be very optimal on the Natami. CPU flavors don't matter much in UAE so different binaries would often be better. Olaf Schoenweiss wrote:

I put Amikit on my laptop which is pretty nice (although I prefer the real thing). It may have a different feel on the Natami. When do you get your Natami? Olaf Schoenweiss wrote:

I am working on programming projects at the moment but I hope some of the more artistic types join the effort. Maybe you can get the unofficial BB3 people to help. I've had good contacts with them and donated to the project. A standard package of upgraded libraries and icons for the classic Amiga ready to be installed would be great whether or not it's a modified Amikit install. I support your efforts and goal.

| i think of to publish upgraded libraries, datatypes and mui-classes as a separate install because i think it could be useful for a lot of people (was a lot of work to collect them)

| regarding Aros... it is a great effort and important for the future but right now most tools and commodoties do not work in it

| i found a description how to install the system on a Amiga 4000 (of course with more ram, 68040 or better 68060 and graphic card) and there is a youtube video with Amikit running on a A1200 so i think it is possible. I hope i will get a Natami in the next weeks (when the drivers are there) and want to concentrate to adapt Amikit (my extended version) to it.

You will have to be careful about... 1) Modified libraries are only as good as there assembler programmers skills and persistence in fixing bugs including introduced ones. 2) Copyrights of abandoned software is still owned by someone. Since you are connected to the Natami project, you should be careful to obey copyright laws. Some icons may be copyright by their authors although many are freely available. Are we getting ahead of ourselves with an advanced installation? What is the plan for getting Natami motherboards up and running when received? Will the Natami ship with AmigaOS 3.1 and will that license cover the kickstart? Maybe the AROS kickstart will be good enough by that time to avoid needing a 3.1 kickstart but I think most users will want an original AmigaOS 3.1 kickstart in one slot as a base and for stability and a modified 3.1 kickstart with bug fixes and large hard drive support in another slot. Will there be AmigaOS 3.1 included for this purpose or will buyers be required to vouch/verify that they own an AmigaOS 3.1 kickstart. After the kickstart is loaded, will the Natami come with a small flash card to boot AmigaOS 3.1 and containing Natami drivers? Without this, an AmigaOS 3.1 floppy install will be needed or an already prepared IDE HD and then a floppy with Natami drivers would be needed as no CDROM, USB, or ethernet drivers are in AmigaOS 3.1. Then it would be nice to have AmigaOS 3.9 with updates, add-ons, and optional eye candy like you are investigating. Maybe someone else is taking care of the base install? I wonder what the fpga Arcade is doing in this regard. Sorry, if you didn't want to be bothered with these details but they are important. An online update and installation like you want to do is a good idea but we do need to think about how we are going to get there.

| @matt there are plenty of artist in the team it is a small problem asking one of them to make a set of icons. @olaf in this case i would have to say one size does not fit all. ;)

| hi, to 1) yes, nobody is forced to use them. I will integrate them but everyone can decide which one to copy. I want to integrate installer, but in most cases you just have to copy them (the same for updated datatypes, cli-commands and mui-classes) to 2) yes I know. I only integrate applications that are official free and inform the copyright owner. Today f.e. i got the permission to integrate Pagestream 3.X At first I want to install them in a directory and integrate them in the user-interface. But there are certain people here that will help me with the graphics

| yes I looked yesterday at Amigasys. I think I will support both Amigakit and Amigsys as far as possible, because both are useful (the User Interface of Amikit is similar to Windows 7 and Amigasys is similar to AmigaOS). I hope to bring them both to a similar level.

| all libraries, datatypes etc. are from aminet and I will include the original downloads. So I do not think i can violate a law, but i will look in the dpocuments of course to be sure and try to inform the owners (if possible)

| (Full Disclosure: I'm one of the lead developers of AROS m68k) I recommend using AROS m68k as the 'default' firmware for NatAMI, and include a reflash utility that lets the user modify the ROM to have AOS 3.1 instead, if they can provide a 3.1 ROM image.

| While I do appreciate all the effort that has gone into Amikit but when I tried it, it felt totally unamiga like to me. Personally I'd like to have an updated OS3.9 or 3.1 with a look more based on OS4 (with 32bit icons and the gradients). I'm only tlaking about look and feel here; technically it should have the most uptodate libs etc... of course ;-)!

| ah, hence me saying one size does not fit all in this case, i personally fell more for the clean classic AOS workbench.... Jason did made a valid point regarding the kickstart.

| Its been a while since I've used my Amiga since it is broken. I'm not up to date on the modern operating system. I write a lot of files using Microsoft Word and blogging sites have tags that can be added for different articles to help find related content or to help you find something related. I often use the search function on Windows XP to find key words in my documents to find the articles I look for. What is the OS like now and can the Amiga Operating System be updated to reflect these modern ways of operation that is reflected on the internet with search tags and so forth?

| i have found several freeware-program for searching that will be integrated in the update. Details later... Word processing is a problem (no permissions) but at least i am allowed to integrate Pagestream 3.x

Hi Jason! Are you willing to work with us to make AROS work better on Natami?

| an AROS rom is the way to go! It's already proven to work on real hardware, iirc, and can be custom-tailored for Natami. I don't think there are any advantages to a real copyrighted rom at this point...Aros needs a Libre Office port...

I believe I read that the Natami will have several 1MB kickstart slots that are selectable from a boot menu. The AROS kickstart price and lack of copyright worries are a nice plus. How does AROS handle the 68060.library functionality currently (needed for missing 68060 64 bit integer math instructions) and is there a working CD-ROM driver available so the buyer can hook up a CD-ROM and boot an AmigaOS 3.9 CD and then use a Natami install CD ;). CD's are cheap and more reliable than my floppies have been. I think USB and new DMA IDE drivers should be put in the AROS kickstart as well. It needs to be reliable enough to boot up AmigaOS 3.1-3.9 and use the flash utility. It would help if a hard core AROS developer like yourself had a Natami for testing. Are you interested in buying a Natami? Maybe a bounty or donations could be taken to help with the price if that's a problem or you could be loaned a machine.
